This will be a short post because I can’t concentrate. As I’m writing this — as I’ve been writing anything the last several days — a cardinal is perpetually flying into the window of my office. Another one is dive-bombing the window in our laundry room, which is just across the hall from my office. It’s like Chinese water torture, in stereo. When it ceases for a few minutes I’m actually on edge, waiting for the next thwack! I understand that it’s spring and each thinks its reflection is another male encroaching on his territory. But until they call a truce with their mirror images, it remains the bane of my existence. And I’m sure it doesn’t feel so hot for the birds, either.
I’m at a loss what to do. The Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota says that predator silhouette decals and life-size plastic birds of prey don’t work (so that saves me a trip to Home Depot). It appears that the only solution is to soap my windows or cover them somehow, which of course defeats the whole purpose of having a window.

Hi Julie, I have several posts regarding this same bird activity (one mention last week and a post about it last year)and I even got a picture of my bird this year but I don’t know how to upload it yet!! Someone told me the female does that because she sees her reflection in the window and thinks it’s another female in her territory. Every year, the same bird does this and I finally capture its photo…
